Pittsburgh International Airport Microgrid Tour
In July of 2021, the Pittsburgh International Airport became the first major US airport to be powered by an onsite microgrid. This plant is capable of 21.5MW of power that is made up of both natural gas and photovoltaic (solar) sources.
On the tour, you will see the 21.5 MW gas-fired power generation plant consisting of (5) 4.3 MW Jenbacher Engines. The plant carries the peak day of the airport with 4 generators with the 5th as a spare for resiliency and selling electricity into PJM.
The solar field is 10 acres in size with over 9,000 solar panels for a total of 3 MW. The solar array is connected to the airport environmental building and virtually meter aggregated over 23 airport buildings, including the county 911 call center. The solar field can be expanded to over 6 MW total.
The Western PA Chapter of the AEE is proud to be able to provide the opportunity to tour this facility and learn how it was developed, constructed, and operates. Please join us for this exciting and informative tour.
